The Jeffrey mine used to be the largest open pit asbestos mine in the world before its activities slowed down and stopped due to the asbestos industry crisis. Its future is uncertain. Some developers wanted to convert it to an environmental complex (landfill) named Estrie-Enviropole, but the project approval failed. The site is currently used as an ATV park. Sad destiny for a site known for its 100+ years of mining activities, its historic 1949 strike, the fight of its retired employees to save their pension plan, and its quality minerals such as garnet and serpentine taillings. This is also where jeffreyite and spertiniite have been first identified. Lots of resources remain unexploited. In the recent years, a plant called Magnola Metallurgy was built in Danville by Noranda (Xstrata) and operated to produce magnesium, but was unable to compete its competitor prices on the world market.
